Several Civil War Trails markers are found in and around the Town of Buchanan that tell the story of Hunter's Raid. One tells how Confederate Gen. McCausland fired on the covered bridge, in the face of Hunter's advancing army. After setting the fire, McCausland swam across the James to safety as Union soldiers fired at him.
